Your financial journey has more than one chapter
Your financial priorities rarely stay the same for very long. At one stage, you may be focused on building your career and managing your first big expenses. A few years later, your attention could shift to buying a home, supporting your family, planning for your children's future or simply creating more financial security. Then there are the unexpected turns, a career break, a new business, a job change or a move to another city.
Your financial
life keeps evolving. So when you think about retirement, it makes sense to have
a plan that can evolve with it. This is where the National Pension System (NPS)
can become relevant. Regulated by PFRDA, NPS provides a structured,
market-linked framework for building retirement wealth over the long term. And
its investment framework has also evolved to offer subscribers more choice.
Since 1 October 2025, the Multiple Scheme Framework (MSF) has allowed
non-government NPS subscribers to invest in multiple schemes offered by Pension
Funds, using a single or multiple PRANs linked to their PAN. These schemes can
offer different investment approaches and risk options, giving subscribers
greater scope to align their retirement investments with their evolving needs
and risk comfort.
Why does that
matter over a financial journey that can span decades?
Consider
someone who starts contributing to NPS while building a career. Their financial
capacity may look very different after a promotion, a home purchase or the
arrival of children. As income and priorities change again, their retirement
investment preferences may also evolve. Access to multiple schemes can give
subscribers greater scope to choose an investment approach that aligns with
their retirement needs and risk comfort.
NPS also
provides for partial withdrawals for specified financial needs during the
accumulation phase. Under the current All Citizen Model, a subscriber becomes
eligible for the first partial withdrawal after completing three years of
subscription. Up to 25% of the subscriber’s own contributions, excluding
appreciation or returns, can be withdrawn, subject to the specified purposes
and applicable conditions. The framework also sets out the frequency and
intervals for subsequent withdrawals.
The numbers can
make the discipline of contributing easier to visualise. A ₹5,000 monthly
contribution means ₹60,000 a year going towards retirement before considering
market-linked returns. As income changes, the amount a person can contribute
may change too. What matters is having a framework that can accommodate continued
retirement investing rather than leaving it to whatever money happens to remain
at the end of the month.
This is where
professional fund management can add another layer of convenience. With ICICI
Pension Fund Management Limited, subscribers can participate in NPS within the
PFRDA-regulated framework while their pension investments are managed through
professional portfolio management and asset-allocation strategies.
