Retirement Planning That Grows Alongside Your Child
Retirement planning is no longer something that needs to begin only after adulthood. With the increasing costs of education, healthcare, and everyday living, starting early can help build greater financial confidence for your child’s future. The National Pension System (NPS) has made it possible to begin retirement-focused financial planning much earlier, even before a child starts earning. At the centre of this framework is the National Pension System Trust, which supports a regulated, transparent, and professionally managed investment structure.
One of
the key initiatives under this framework is NPS Vatsalya Yojana. Unlike
conventional financial planning for children, which often focuses on education,
marriage, or other near-term milestones, NPS Vatsalya is specifically designed
to help secure a child’s long-term financial future. Parents or legal guardians
can open an NPS Vatsalya account for a minor, allowing contributions made today
to potentially grow into a significant corpus over several decades.
The
greatest advantage of starting early is the power of time and compounding. With
the help of an NPS pension calculator, parents can understand how regular contributions
can potentially accumulate over the long term. Even a contribution of a few
thousand rupees every month can grow into a sizeable retirement corpus when
supported by disciplined investing and a long investment horizon.
NPS
Vatsalya also aims to balance long-term retirement planning with financial
flexibility. Parents or legal guardians can open an account for a minor with
contributions starting from as little as ₹250, making early retirement planning
accessible to a wider range of families. Contributions do not have to come only
from parents or legal guardians. Grandparents, relatives, and friends can also
contribute, making NPS Vatsalya a meaningful way for loved ones to participate
in building the child’s long-term financial future.
The
updated withdrawal framework also provides greater flexibility when funds may
be required for important life needs. Partial withdrawals are permitted after
the account has completed three years from the date of opening. Subscribers can
withdraw up to 25 percent of their own contributions, excluding returns, for
specified purposes such as the child’s education, treatment of specified
illnesses, or disability-related requirements. The revised framework allows up
to two partial withdrawals before the child turns 18 and up to two additional
withdrawals between the ages of 18 and 21, subject to the applicable
conditions. This provides families with access to funds during significant life
stages while keeping the long-term retirement objective intact.
NPS
Vatsalya also has a defined transition and exit framework. When the child
reaches 18 years of age, the account can continue as a regular NPS Tier I
account, or the transition can continue further up to the age of 21, providing
additional flexibility for financial planning. The revised framework has also
increased the lump-sum withdrawal threshold. If the accumulated corpus is up to
₹8 lakh, the entire amount can be withdrawn as a lump sum without a mandatory
annuity purchase. If the corpus exceeds ₹8 lakh, a prescribed portion is
required to be utilised for purchasing an annuity to generate long-term pension
income, while the remaining amount can be withdrawn as a lump sum. This
approach aims to maintain a balance between liquidity and the core objective of
creating a sustainable retirement corpus.
